From Online Communication Committee: We are looking for PHOTOS for our new website. Please send your favorite ones to quakersroanoke@gmail.com. We are especially interested of shots with Friends in them, that may add a welcoming feel to our website. Perhaps someone took a few at the two recent potlucks, or the Solstice celebration?
Monday, July 17 (3rd Monday), 6:30 pm, Quaker Reading Group, on Zoom. All are welcome to join us. We are discussing a brief but very rich passage in John Woolman’s Journal, the last 3 1/2 pages of Chapter 10 (pp. 159-62, Moulton ed.). Woolman writes about becoming seriously ill after a time of great confusion, he dictates to a neighbor his thoughts about prayer, and he records an intense dream. We respond to the reading in a worship-sharing format, speaking from our own experience. If you’d like the zoom link or a copy of the reading, contact Mike Heller.
From the Religious Education Committee: There will be no Religious Education programs in July and August
Help Our Meeting Be a WVTF-FM Day Sponsor: Many people in the Roanoke Quaker Meeting support WVTF-FM, the local NPR station, financially. Our Outreach Committee would like to invite you to send your checks to the Meeting treasurer. Please make checks out to “Roanoke Quaker Meeting” and please earmark them as “WVTF-FM contribution”. If we bundle together several checks, we can send them to WVTF-FM as one contribution and be listed as a sponsor of their programming. We would get an online blurb, "This program is sponsored by the Roanoke Quaker Meeting", along with our website. It's good outreach. Please make out the checks to WVTF-FM and send them to Letty Collins, 8017 Goose Creek Valley, Montvale, VA 24122. Frederick Douglass Speaks on Democracy, Tues July 11, 5:30 pm, Harrison Museum of African American Culture, a live speaking event with poet and historian Nathan Richardson. Donation of $20 requested. RSVP at the museum’s website,. (Mike Heller)
Book Group Discussions of Reparations: A Christian Call for Repentance and Repair: A book group will begin discussing Duke Kwon and Gregory Thompsons’ Reparations on Wed July 12 at the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, time to be determined. Also, Charlyn Griffin and Mike Heller are planning to begin a book group reading the same book, to begin in September. Watch for further announcements. (Mike Heller)
BYM Annual Sessions will take place July 31 – August 6 at Hood College in Frederick, MD. Registration Deadline: Friday, July 21 (for in-person). Friends can register online or by calling Lucy Azenga, BYM Administrative Assistant, at 301-658-6797

The Spring Interchange newsletter, in particular, gives the details on our schedule, retreat, workshops, plenaries, and other aspects of Annual Sessions. This is the time each year Friends gather from across our region to do the Business of our Yearly Meeting – but also a time to gather for Quaker fellowship, spiritual deepening, educational workshops, and new friendships.
Joys and Concerns, Prayer Requests, and Gratitude
Joys:
Delightful rain that is needed so much.
Joy in hearing the thoughtful report from the FGC Gathering.
Genevieve is home with Connie in Roanoke & would like visitors in the next 90 days.
Returning from Texas, where Charlie danced with his new granddaughter, adopted by son Adam & his wife. (see poem below)

Patsy & Tony’s friend, Jan Michael, whose wife Sue Garzon passed away recently. Jan was co-clerk of the 2019 FGC Gathering at Grinnell College. Sue and Jan have been active participants in our online chanting group.
Mike’s friend Mary Crockett Hill, who has a very serious illness
Concerns:
Jenny Chapman had an allergic reaction to the dressing after her knee surgery, but is doing well now.
The suffering of wild animals who share the planet with us.
Missing a pet who hasn’t come home.
Gratitude:
Joy’s daughter and her entourage made it to Massachusetts where they are moving.

Worship Opportunities:
Saturday Quaker Worship at 10:30 am: All are welcome each Saturday at Highland Park, Alexander-Gish House, near the entrance to the parking lot on Walnut Avenue SW just off Fifth Street. Please bring a chair if you can.
Midweek Quaker Worship: the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays each month at 7:00 pm. The next one will be Wednesday June 14 on Zoom (see link in calendar above).
Worship on Zoom and In-Person continues every Sunday at 10:30: We are so pleased that we can continue to worship either on Zoom or in-person in the meetinghouse on Sunday mornings! Masks are no longer required. Unvaccinated participants are welcome and are encouraged to wear a mask. Masks are available in the Meetinghouse. Social distancing is recommended.

I danced with an angel yesterday,

Eight pounds and shining eyes bright
she flowed with the soft sway
of a dance in the kitchen
in the arms of her Pop Pop
softly singing to his angel.
I'll not forget that magical day
